Nicky Whelan helps Harrow to promote greener travel

Neighbours actress Nicky Whelan has lent her support to Harrow’s sustainable transport campaign which encourages you to walk, cycle, car share and use public transport more in a bid to reduce traffic congestion and help the environment.

The Australian actress, who plays the role of Pepper Steiger on Neighbours, attended an event in Harrow, last year, to support environmental efforts and announce she would be the face of the campaign for 2008. During the event, Nicky was swarmed by fans who travelled from all over the UK to meet her and she braved the afternoon cold to ensure she met as many people as possible.

What is the campaign all about?

Harrow's 2008 travel awareness campaign has the message: “It’s Up To All Of Us” - which is simply about our individual responsibility of making travel choices that help reduce transport pollution and ultimately reduce harm to the planet. As individuals we obviously also benefit as walking and cycling are enjoyed as activities that have positive effects on our own health and overall wellbeing. Using public transport is a cost effective and efficient way to get to most places and allows you time to yourself to plan for the day ahead or reflect on the day gone, and car sharing makes the journey more fun when it’s with a friend/colleague.

The advertising in and around Harrow will be supported by a range of events beginning Spring '08 onwards, which will play a big role in encouraging a more positive change in lifestyle habits such as the popular annual Bike Week promotions taking place in towns nation wide. More details of these will be posted on this blog soon...

So be a hero and help to save the planet whilst reaping the health benefits too. It really is up to ALL of us and people ARE making a difference, keep it up!

Have you seen the banners in the town centre? What do you think, and if you had a message to preach on living more sustainably - what would it be? Dont keep it to yourself - Blog it!

Good to see support from someone famous, more celebrities should step up to the plate to combat the apathy that exists

The banners up in Harrow Town Centre are impressive!

They not only promote alternative modes of transport to the private car user but also reinforce the message to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

A few more along College Road would be great!
