Car Crunch

Motorists in London who give up their vehicles will be entitled to free driving time with a pay-as-you-go car club under a scheme backed by the Mayor of London.

The Car Crunch London initiative aims to reward those who can prove they have sold a car with two year’s membership of a car club and free driving time, which normally costs from £3.95 an hour. The scheme is part of an initiaitve to reduce the number of cars on London’s roads by 100,000 before the 2012 Olympics.
Car Clubs can offer a slick, money-saving and green alternative to private car ownership. If you drive less than 6,000 miles per year it is claimed a car club could save you up to £3,500 a year. Many people don’t notice the true costs of running a car, but when you add up the cost of tax, MOT, fuel, servicing, repairs, depreciation and parking you could be looking at over a hundred pounds a week.

Uh oh, car clubs. Here we go again...

Apparently this is only valid with Streetcar? If so, what a waste. Streetcar don't even operate in Harrow.

Streetcar have zero interest in operating in outer London boroughs. As far as I know.

I spoke to someone in Harrow a while back and he informed he that Streetcar wouldn't return calls to meet with Harrow to discuss car clubs in Harrow! So here's hoping the Mayor's reading this and makes the necessary changes.

I think this is a great incentive. Let's stop thinking about the immediate impact on Harrow and the wider impact on London. If people use this to sign up for a car club for longer then good for everyone.

Here, here! I agree, it's a great idea and hope it starts making the shift from a car ownership culture, but also think it's a major bummer that this doesn't apply to Harrow because it uses an operator that doesn't want to come to Harrow.

Streetcar ain't so bad.

This is raising the same issue as the previous car club debate whcih got quite heated and had contributions from City Car Club and Street Car. Look, what are the true value of car clubs and since the last debate which was a while ago, Streetcar haven't done anything to increase their presence in Harrow or taken up our offer of promoting car clubs at the station (or if they have I haven't seen them). The Department for Transport have decided not to fund car clubs in the forthcoming year which is a bit telling really and hopefully everyone will realize these things don't do anything more than rent cars to people who already own cars or entice people off public transport.

I think it's a good deal. Give up your car for a rental one and you get money towards the rental. Just waiting for someone to point out there's a minimum period you have to stay with them or something.

Car clubs? What next?

If people do give up their cars and join a car club, it should be free anyway. Personal belongings should be discouraged. Everything should be controlled.

Happy X everyone!

I think he/she meant Happy Xmas! (X would imply something else!)

Yeah, dont spend the break in a car club!

I'm not even going to touch this topic with a barge pole. Car Clubs? Case closed.

You said it, buddy. Dft = no funding says a lot without saying it. Also the fact that it's all so commercial (nothing wrong with that as long as it's not rolled out by the mayor) and so on. Streetcar if you're reading, stay off my street!!!!
