We recnetly carried a story on this blog about tax-breaks for plug-in hybrids and how this begins incentivising a more sustainable lifestyle. A reader has highlighted that this is also happening in other areas such as travel insurance.
A green insurance provider that rewards travellers who do not fly is reporting a huge increase this summer in the number of holiday makers going green.
With the summer holiday season now closed, the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) has announced a four-fold increase in the number of green holiday insurance policies sold.
The news follows research by the ETA that reveals four in ten people in Britain would welcome more advice on how to reduce their carbon footprint and that one in ten people has already reduced their emissions of CO2 as result of concern about their travel-related emissions.
Director at the ETA, Andrew Davis said: “We are happy to reward those who choose not to fly for environmental reasons. We are seeing an increasing number of holidaymakers keen to reduce the environmental impact of their travels – they want to go green without compromising on quality.”

I have green energy tarriffs and a green fuel bill. I also go paperless whenever I can and do everything online - this can have its disadvantages though as there are usually no incentives from the supplier and it's a pain to get hard copies of bills when you need one.
I recycle and have recently had my loft insulated but that's about it. I'd like to have green insurance but these things need to be incentivized more.
I would definitely get insurance that rewarded me to not fly just like the energy one that pays you for using less.
I fly business regularly and I hate having to fly london to luton or scotland or ireland when it's cheaper by rail. But unless I'm flying it's not business, which is wrong. Businesses need to give employees the option of travelling by rail and saving them money and the environment. The savings could benefit the business or be used to promote more green issues in the workplace.
It's good green travel is up but I hope its also businesses that follow suit rather than just individuals. well done to ETA for incentivizing it though, come on the rest of you!
I think we're limited in what we can do. Especially since society isn't yet accommodating to issues that help stop climate change. You can save trees by signing up for paperless billing on everything from gas and electric to your phone bill, but this will probably only cause problems in the future when you need bills for proof of address/ID. The supplier will usually charge for reprint bills and printing out online ones won't be good enough and they may not even be stored for that long.
You could cut down your car use but honestly I'm not someone who takes my car everywhere either. I take the train into work, and go out occasionally on weekends by car and that's ok, the people who are the problem are those who take their car everywhere without needing to like those dropping off school kids down the road and doing shopping which is round the corner.
I don't fly frequently and so am not one of those aggressive polluters either.
I recycle (as we all have to) and realistically all I can do is lobby the government and corporations to stop polluting the world but until they do we can only do so much... and chances are we're doing it!
