Build Your Own Future Car

Keeping with September's theme of "clean air for all" and European Mobility Week, an interesting article was brought to our attention today.

One company is selling the plans to build your own futuristic plug-in hybrid car, called an XR3, which can also be modified to be an electric vehicle.

If tinkering with your car, souping it up with extras and the like excites you then this car will set your imagination on fire as you can shape how it looks, its features and the entire car could cost you for a basic version £5000. Add on the fuel savings and you're onto a winner.

An interesting concept, the XR3 Hybrid is a super-fuel-efficient, two-passenger plug-in hybrid car that achieves 125 mpg on diesel power alone, 225 mpg on combined diesel and electric power, and boasts performance similar to a conventional car.
The futuristic-looking three wheeler can be powered by a combination of its diesel engine and electric motor or, for a distance of 40 miles, on electric power alone. The car is designed to accept any number of different donor engines and can be upgraded over time.

The design of the XR3 Hybrid focuses on existing technologies and a vehicle “personality” that makes conserving energy a fun driving experience. It showcases the design ideas explored in Robert Q. Riley’s book, Alternative Cars in the 21st Century.

So if you fancy buying the plans to build your own car for around £100 (plans and DVD) and want a pet project that could pay off in the future, then have a look into the XR3 Hybrid by Robert Riley Enterprises. Learn more here.

I was drooling over the Tesla until I saw the asking price. Now I've gone and impulse-ordered the plans to this car because it's a fraction of the price and if I find the parts cheap I can make it even cheaper.

I'm really looking forward to this. Might not finish it for a while but the thought of building my own car as opposed to buying one and pimping it gets my motor going (pun intended).

I can't believe this, it's a dream come true!

I've ordered the basic plans as they should be as good as the deluxe ones and I'll have saved a bit more bob.

I like the look of this car. At first it seemed plasticky but after seeing the images it looks pretty top notch and futuristic! I’m going to build it and if it’s not ready by 2011 then it’ll still be futuristic! I just need to figure out how to register it and what it qualifies as although the 3wheels will help.

Excellent find, the future’s here!!!

I'm clearing out the garage, ordering my plans and gonna get building. So long to the suckers who pay top money for their 1st car or a battered boot licker, mine's gonna be electric and will look after the future and be cheap to run. I'm gonna build the electric only version which is more suited to the UK. Harrow, will I get free parking or should I make it a flying/hover version? ;)

This is the sexiest future car ever. I'm going to build it and cruise Harrow in it!

I was really excited when I read this and ordered the plans. Now I'm having second thoughts because I don't know where I'll get all the parts from. I may still be ok or could just sell on the plans if I find myself not doing it. But a big consolation is I spent less than £100 on the plans to a new electric car, so I'm cool with it as of now.

I've ordered the plans to this and another of their cars, the Centruion - it was in Total Recall! I recognised it!!!

I can't believe I'm going to be building cars, this is fantastic!!!!

Have there been electric cars in other films too? What about Blade Runner?

Wall-E is all about this blog - it's up to all of us to save the planet!

I love this blog and Harrow, let's keep it green, clean and save the world.

Air quality? I never knew what it was about. I remember Harrow Times used to have some smiley faces about how good or bad the air was in the borough but that was it. I get it a bit more now thanks to this podcast. Although I didn't see it here first! I caught it on AppleTV.

Good to see the blog is getting around.

I saw it on ATV too! They should enhance it for ATV though like other podcasts. I was chuffed to see a local podcast on it and on iTu.

Harrow rules!

Bananaman and JoBlow -your comments are about the podcast and not this post! Good podcast I know but this one is about the car!!

I love this car man, I want one.

I prefer the Tesla but am glad to see things like this happen - a diy car at a price that's right and one that can maintain itself in the future.

Are you serious? I have always DREAMT of an affordable car with gull wings and now I can build it, customize it and make it my own? I'm ordering the plans right now!!! My car will look slightly different and I'm going to have tailpipes off the doors.

I know someone who has the plans already and they are top notch. One look and they'll scare you off but once you sit down with them and go through all the material provided it looks easy as pie.

Except you have to get the parts. I like that the parts that are obviously US-based have alternatives here too. Looking forward to seeing someone here making one of these.

WICKED CAR. WICKED IDEA. WHERE DO I GET ONE?

I still prefer the Tesla

I have ordered basic plans and will see what they're like before I start building. I haven't got high hopes for finding all I need but only time will tell.

Hope it is as good as it sounds though and not some cheap, difficult to run remote controlled R2 unit.
