The Environmental Transport Agency has published an article today about the way cars are going to be advertised in the near future:
Magazine publishers are angry at plans by the European commission to introduce a “traffic lights” system whereby red dots or stars would mark out high-emission cars, and green ones low-pollution ones.
European environment ministers meet today to argue over the problem of reducing emissions. On cars the aim is to limit CO2 from new cars to 120g a kilometre by 2012. However, there is already disagreement over how best to calculate the emissions, how to deal with offenders or whether and what level of fines to impose.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association said: “We believe very strongly that people should make an informed decision when they buy a car – the ETA was first to offer a green car buyers’ guide, but unless we impose an across-the-board tax on carbon emissions we will be doing little more than tinkering at the edges and people will be forgiven for thinking that cars are the only source of pollution.”
What do you think about the new proposed vehicle advertising changes? Do you feel car manufacturers are obliged to publicise their ‘green rating’ so you can make an informed decision? Or do you think manufacturers should advertise their products as they see fit and not have to conform with disclosing their vehicles’ environmental impact within the advertising given this information can be found out when you purchase the car? Your take..

I think carmakers are stupid if they think we dont care about what we're buying. If a car is killing the planet, I want to know. I want these ratings asap so I can make a informed decision.
I had a car which drove like a dream and looked deadly. I gave it up when I found out how much it was poisoning the air. I wish I knew earlier. Now I have a G Whiz and a bike. I'm just one person but I sleep better at night knowing I'm not destroying the planet.
Good idea. Let's keep everyone in check. All cars need to be rated and makers need to understand consumers care about what they're buying so if they don't tell us something we are not going to buy from them.
