is there any hope :(
"We now have data showing that from 2000 to 2007, greenhouse gas emissions increased far more rapidly than we expected, primarily because developing countries, like China and India, saw a huge surge in electric power generation, almost all of it based on coal."
Love the way it's anyone's fault who has started using electricity more rather than the UK and US's consumption going throgh the roof in that time due to iPods, Laptop usage increasing, broadband and HDTV taking off massively and so much more. More Sky boxes despatched in this period than ever before and more flights too.
Things are worse because the consumer's appetite is increasing. We now have next geenration gaming machines, mobile phones which are charged every day and sometimes charged when they don't need to be, laptops and so forth. The number of gadgets that have been released especially 2003 - 2008 has been through the roof as people have just had money to spend and wanted to splurge on luxury. I feared it may be worse than we though but it's not too late. When will legislation change this?
There needs to be a government rule of law that only allows greener technology and vehicles. This is the only way, save armageddon, that people will take note.
This is not surprizing at all given that there hasbeen a very slow progress in the past years. There needs to be change now not only to slow down global warming but also to reverse it's effects. We have a daunting and massive task ahead of us. Mobilize people, we gotta stop the end of the environment, and hence te world.
This is a good follow up from the Follow the Leader post, both indicate we need to ensure that changes are made and done so now. There is no act now to save the future, this is the future and if we want to prolong it then we need to apply pressure to the leaders of the most polluting countries to make a change and help curb diasaster.
I am devastated by this news.
We are gfoing to have to live on Mars in the future unless Obama can save the world.
or spiderman
What about Batman?
He's too busy with his hands full in Gotham. Didn't you see Dark Knight?
Seriously guys, this is bad news. Do your bit, play your part and help slow the process down by using greener travel and living greener.
I think if Superman flew round the world backwards like in the film we could reverse the whole problem and save the planet by setting things right.
OK, that never happened. I loved the film and you're just making stuff up.
The IPCC is correct in its conclusions and steps need to be taken to slow down the consumption of electricity, the vast amount of air travel and other quick wins which are dealing a devastating blow on the Earth's climate.
I think he meant in the original superman with Chrstopher Reeve (rip) and although I loved that film even I had issues with that theory of turning back time by reversing it's rotation! That would destroy it at one point when it crosses itself.
What if the Flash ran round it instead?
The situation being worse than thought means we just have to act faster and do more now. We need to bring in by force greener living because the choice is what is killing us all. Poison the planet by leaving things plugged in? The electricity providers need to cap how much can be wasted and assess home usage frequently. This isn't big brother but responsible use for all our futures.
I would hate my electricity provider to tell me to not watch too much telly or not let me boil the kettle if too many people came round and it wouldn't make business sense from their point of view either.
I get your point Helen, but the capping needs to be done differently - via havign appliances that don't consume more than a certain amount of power.
I think that if Superman flew round the world fast enough to reverse the earth’s orbit that would be so cool, but it seems there are many flaws in this theory.
1. The first is that flying round the world at a speed that would reverse the earth’s gravitational pull and force the sun to also have a negative effect on the world requires an immense amount of speed and FORCE. I don’t think speed would do it alone.
2. The force required to make the earth shift rotation would most likely not be without consequence including destruction on earth if not the entire destruction of it. You are messing with the poles, the weather, the gravitational pull, the earth’s position in the solar system and more. The effects would be immeasurable because we’d probably die in the process.
3. The earth being reversed in rotation via this method would need to end in exactly the same speed as it began with. E.g. If it currently rotates forward at x revolutions causing 1 day to be 24 hours long, 1 month to be y number of days etc, when it is all reversed, the same time continuum needs to be adhered to. Also don’t forget the earth actually needs to be rotated back (to apparently reverse time) THEN FORWARD to start it up again. The reverse cannot be at a faster speed than the speed forward and the amount of flying Superman would need to do is more than anything imaginable, and then again he would need to apply FORCE. So the speed would need to be constant at 3 points: the beginning rate of revolution, the revolution in reverse and the revolution when started again.
4. The change in the earth’s gravitational pull and spin would undoubtedly cause a ripple effect in the surrounding galaxy and may pull stars towards it, push them away, create miniature comets and even affect the distance between neighbouring planets in our solar system. The effects of all of these are immeasurable and most likely negative.
5. Human life would cease as we know it as our internal organs would not cope with such a grand shift in polarity and climate within such a short period of time.
6. Geographic locations on earth would shift.
7. There are many other flaws in this but the two biggest remaining ones are firstly that this may not even reverse climate change but completely annihilate the climate as the polar ice caps, life of animals, plants and the earth’s atmosphere would not be able to take such a drastic shift. So you may end up destroying what you seek to protect.
8. The final flaw is of course, Superman doesn’t exist.
Michael, I am amazed by the effort you have put in to your post and the thought you have given this. If everyone put the same amount of effort into simply recycling, using less power and greener travel/living, we wouldn't be in this mess.
WHOA!!!!!!
Wow, I am left breathless by Michael's assessment. Thanks for clarifying Mike ;) LOL
We are consuming more power, flying more planes, burning more coals and heating up the planet. We need to change our lifestyles NOW.
I can't believe Superman flying backwards won't solve this.
doom gloom despair.
not too happy about this (obviously). Gather round people, time to get active and actually achieve something. No more talking, time for doers.
