The actor Leonardo DiCaprio has traded in his Toyota Prius hybrid car for a £75,000 Tesla Roadster, the world’s first high-performance production electric sports car.
Dicaprio is well known for his interest in the environment and is linked with the Toyota Prius almost every time it is mentioned in the press, but the two-seater, all-electric Tesla is a radically different car in almost every respect.
In an interview with the Daily Mail newspaper DiCaprio says of his new Tesla: “It’s my first sports car and it’s an unbelievable drive…it all happens with the flip of a switch, unlike a piston-driven engine that needs to build up momentum.”

Leonardo DiCaprio has been an active campaigner for the environment and produced the documentary 'The 11th Hour' which is available from his website.

I don't think it's a PR stunt. No statement from Leo either time, he just does it and lives it. He got the Prius and didn't promote the model but environmentally moral driving and he has done more than his share since getting the Prius. Add to that he's traded it in for an all-electric shows he means business and is doing his fair share. His doing it will for sure isnpire others and not to mention the many lovely ladies he'll probably take out in his new shiny car will probably also be impressed and maybe somewhere down the road they'll also get one. So for publciity? Nah. For the earth, fool!
Whatever the reason, he's made a decision to go all electric which is fab. Another point for EVs and the Tesla for making it be so cool.

I'm very impressed with his documentary - a real documentary compared to an Inconvenient Truth which was entertaining and great but nothing like this one.

I love the Tesla although I think all Hollywood stars should WALK given they all wanna be on the Walk of fame.
Whilst it's great that Leo is genuinely committed to green issues some of his choices could be better. Upgrading to a sports car - whether green or not isn't sending out the right message for the need to live more modest lifestyles. A new car requires huge amounts of resources to produce - which has numerous impacts on the environment - including contributing to climate change.

I can't believe he got rid of his Prius, it was a class car. But then if you're gonna get a sports vehicle, I'm happy it's a Tesla and not something else.
The Tesla isn't as hot as it was piped to be. I think there awill be better vehicles coming soon.

I cannot express how impactful it can be when celebrities make the effort on their own back. I am so thrilled with this. His documentary on global warming was fabulous and this is the icing on the cake. BUT he needs to give the Tesla as much publicity as he did the Prius and do it to the elite who can afford it. The Tesla is a premium sports car and I hope Leonardo’s buddies all buy the same car and gas stations go out of business in his neighbourhood. That’s the only way people can make a difference.
I love the Tesla and the Prius but the Prius is what I’m saving for because first the Tesla is worth more than my flat and secondly, the Tesla isn’t even available outside the US yet.
