Plug-In Hybrid Heading Your Way

A Chinese company has put the world’s first massed-produced, plug-in vehicle on the market.

The BYD F6 can run on a conventional petrol engine or for 62 miles on battery power alone. The batteries can be topped up via a household electrical supply Conventional hybrid cars use a petrol or diesel engine to charge their batteries.
The firm says the F6 model is due to be launched throughout America and Europe in 2011. The car is on sale for 150,000 yuan (£14,000) and has beaten a plug-in version of the Toyota Prius to market.

A pretty nifty looking normal car - which is a bonus for a hybrid!

Very nice, and in black too. The F6 should be renamed the A1! I like.

At last an affordable hyrbid arrives that does not compromise on style, substance and speed. This is what the consumer market has been waiting for. The Prius is a marvellous contraption but not everyone's cup of tea in terms of design or cost. In fact, it outprices many. The F6, if available at this price in the UK, would be the first of a very welcome step towards making greener technology affordable and within reach for many motorists. We don't all need to ditch our cars, just make them less polluting and the F6 helps that. Please keep us updated.

The F6 is the first drool-inducing hybrid. I hope it arrives soon and Boris and Gordon don't penalize us for owning it.

62 Miles on Battery power alone is a real achievement and if it tops up through a standard plug, that's excellent. I welcome this! Prius, time to step up your game

I am dying for a plug-in hybrid and hope this arrives before 2011, or if it does I expect everyone to be driving to the Olympics in one of these.

Plug in Hybrid that costs the right price and saves a packet while looking better than the Prius. Brilliant!

I cannot wait for this car to come out.

The F6 and the Joule means we'll be spoiled for choice and they are both similarly priced. I'd personally wait buying a car until this comes out as it looks slick, but for those who don't want it, you can take to the skies with the Skycar! Bring on the butter!

A Chinese company, a great car which should be the staple choice of all car purchasers and a good price. Is Rob Lowe gonna help us get tax breaks? If yes, I'll take two!

I hope these announcements all come to fruition. It really is a sign of the times that there are so many eco cars coming out and is great to have such a choice. Previously you had no choice except if you wanted electric it HAD to be a G Whiz or an electric motorbike. Want a hybrid, it'll have to be an expensive Prius. Now there are so many more hybrids and the new Corsa has a back rack that extends just so you can use your bike too if you need to. I am highly impressed and hopeful for the future now.
