Special Podcast

REPOST: The last podcast of 2008 has a very special guest: Transport for London's Travel Awareness Manger, Andy Pidduck. He works in the Smarter Travel Unit of TfL and leads the direction of London-wide campaigns. Hear what he had to say about Harrow's work, how important it is we all do what we can and more below.

Nice to know how it works, and I LOVE the Together for London campaign. As someone who uses public transport, I think it's a great little reminder for everyone.

Interesting and informative.

Nice to see Harrow get props! I enjoy going to the events and can't wait for the next batch. Will there be reindeer this year in St Ann's?

Good podcast to end the year on, but I want another one that's more Xmassy!

This guy sounds quite nice, I though they'd be ogres.

LOL@ogre comment from Peter Jackson. Yeah right mate. Stick to Lord of the Rings.

Thanks for this, it's cleared a lot of things up for me as to how things work. I liked that it was more a general overview than specifics and think both Harrow and tfl are doing an excellent job. I only wish it went on longer, any chance of a follow up? I'd like to know:

Who decides how much money each area gets and what a priority is? I liked the cycle campaigns that said extend your life. I'm not a cyclist at all but it made me think about getting some exercise especially after a health check up and this made me think about cycling. I don't think I'd be crazy enough to do it on the roads but maybe for leisure. So I hope there's more of this.

I think the It's UP to al of us promo is brilliant. I love going to local shops and seeing these everywhere and the friendliness and positive effort that is being made in this way. This website for me is a great resource and you often highlight things to me that I hadn't thought of or things I have but never given a second thought. I found the comments on your Hollywood star blogs very interesting and encouraging. It's nice to see young people taking more of an interest and especially mr Feldman. His interview was very good.

I haven't seen the together for london signs yet, where are they up?

If a bus has an incident on it and the driver doesn't get involved, what can be done about it? I was driving behind a bus that just stopped due to an incident and it blocked so much traffic.

I have more questions if interested.

Together for London is a great campaign. It's on buses and at train stations and is about things you can do to make everyone's journey better, like giving up your seat for the elderly.

It's Up to .. is fantastic. It's great to see the posters everywhere and the web site is the best especially when you put up stuff like this podcast, the interview with Corey, videos from events and pictures that feature us - the public (2nd left on image 4 of the mass bike ride is ME!). I have been following this site since June and love it.

Keep up the excellent work.

This actually sounds like a Xmas radio show, I love it! It's got that winding down end of year feel but stays informative. How can I be at one of these tapings?

You both sound so enthusiastic and passionate about smarter travel. I hope you succeed and am surprised so many trips in London are so short a distance. I hope the gym bodies and school children start walking more. Public transport should remain for paid users and the elderly, not children who use it to go one stop and delay trips for the rest of us.

I really like this one, it's too short though!!!! I want more! MORE!

I'm with ya Linda - great podcast, good sound (better than the one on electric bikes - that was terrible in sound quality - seems the bikes interferred with the mic or magnetized the riders?) but I wish it was a longer one.

I must say the 1st podcast, this one and the Corey Feldman one are just fantastic. Well done.

nice but short.

You heard him everyone: no more short trips by car - what's the point?

Anonymous said...

I always drive to the gym because it's free parking. I've heard this argument millions of times and even saw the sexy warm up before you work out posters but I had to drive as it got me to the gym quicker.

I have finally found a way to jog to my local gym as I've recently switched my routine to early mornings. Just thought I'd share that so the percentage of short trips by car should drop a bit every day!

Well done Douglas, keep up the good work!

Short trips seem to be the killer. I'm so pleased he said there are journeys that need to be by car. I went into central London and at one of their green fairs it was so anti car it was antagonizing.

I'm pleased tfl and harrow recognise it's not about replacing cars but just managing how we travel when we can. I was honestly skeptical about this campaign when it started and was waitingfor it to attach drivers, but it's been so positive it's made me receptive to the message. I do carshare and encourage my children to walk and use public transport. I wouldn't if you prescribed me to do it or tried to make me, but this open discussion, positive and pro-active messages are great. I'm semi-converted.

After all, it's up to all of us!

I used to drop the kids to school and now make them take free public transport. Lately I've told them to walk because they couldn't get on the bus sometimes as it was full. I'm happy to drop them but once I stopped dropping them we both preferred it. My kids don't hate me but seems they like the time to themselves. And here I was thinking they were lazy! The walk is 20 minutes so I'm pleased they're getting some exercise too as I imagine they're the least active in PE.

It's not just up to us but for us, so we shuold all try.

Bike week - brilliant
mass bike ride - mind bending
its up to all of us - it's just the BEST!

I'm at Whitmore High School (sssh, i'm supposed to be studying) and I really like that Nicky from neighbours is doing this. I met her at your event and she was tops. I also like the Corey stuff although I have only seen Lost Boys. Keep doing stuff that young people like like this and not just for old people please. Thanks. Liked the corey interview. Back to class..

I like it when London works together to do things like this. Very nice and well done.

cool. short and sweet. nice studio audience ;)

Banish short trips by car from your daily routine. The ebst thing to do is start cycling, it's fast, free and gets you fit. If you can't do that, then walk - it's free (not so fast) and good for you (fresh air, walking burns calories). If your journey isn't as short as it could be, take a bus. Get yourself a prepay Oyster card and every bus journey costs you around a quid. Two bob to get to tescos and back, not bad given how much you'd spend in petrol, the extra weight would do to your fuel efficiency and that you'd get no fresh air.

Make these changes and you're doing something good for you and good for everyone.

Thanks for the interview, interesting stuff but yes, too brief.

another good listen. Happy Xmas everyone!

I really like the sound and feel of this podcast! Thanks and a nice one to end the year on - although I'm SURE you need to do another one before Xmas! Come on, 2009 is a whole month away!
