Cyclists vs Commuters

"The bicycle. It's the model of green transport and sales of folding ones that fit on trains are stepping up a gear. But as they multiply, so does rush-hour resentment, as commuters and cyclists come to blows."

This is the opening paragraph of an article on the BBC news website which deals with some of the attitudes towards cycles on the tube and the ever-growing debate about folding bikes being taken on trains.

The full article can be read here.

The increasing number of bikes on trains shows that more and more people are commuting to and from work using sustainable modes of transport, combining the train journey with walking, a bus ride or cycling. Folding bikes are becoming more popular and at a recent "Try Cycling" program Harrow Council ran for the Primary Care Trust, the majority of participants wanted folding bikes to combine two journeys (often car journeys).

A folding bike on a train is far better than a full non-folding bike frame being taken on board a train and in most cases, when folded, new bikes take up as much space as an old style briefcase. The debate seems to be more about capacity on the tube rather than bikes on them.

Are you a cyclist and have you experienced problems with your bike on the tube? Or maybe you're a commuter who doesn't like folding bikes on the Underground. Whatever your view, blog it!

I am a new cyclist and was shocked to find out I can't take my bike on the train unless it's after 7pm. The day I bought the bike, I felt so happy until I was stopped at Harrow station for having my bike. When will this change? Cyclists and train commuters are both doing something good by not taking the car, surely we can get along?

hate hate hate people on tube with bikes. inconsiderate, dont know how to manoever their bikes without hitting people and bring muddy tyres on the train. keep trains for people and not wheels.

Issue of bikes on trains need to be resolved by the train stations and agreed on. Don't exclude bikes maybe have cerrtain carriages for them though. I don't know the solution, we could debate it forever. But yes, trains should have storage for bikes as part of green living and travel, BUT without any disruption to other passengers.

guy brought a bike on the train and got the muddy wheel print on my skirt and knocked another man where it hurts. Trains aren't for bikes.
