Change the world with a workout

“Walking is the best form of exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.”
- Thomas Jefferson.

What would you say if I told you that there was a way to change the world without having to spend any money? The solution? It’s simple. Just work out. That’s it. Exercise. Naturally. What is a workout? Well experts recommend you get 30 minutes of exercise every day, which could include getting off at an earlier bus stop than usual and walking the extra distance. To me, that’s not a challenge but a chore. What I would do is get off the bus two stops early and see if I can sprint and beat the bus to the stop I would usually get off at. Most times I’ll win because the bus needs to stop and start in traffic and the delay this causes gives me an extra few seconds to beat the bus. Plus a bus has speed limits – I don’t!

Walking up and down the stairs is considered a good way of getting some exercise too so every morning when I’m going up to my desk I dash up 3 flights of stairs as if I’m climbing up a mountain to scale new heights. When I get to my desk I’m usually the first one in and I feel a sense of exhilaration. My heart races and I go straight for the water cooler. I start my workday with a burst of energy because I know that most of it will be spent at my desk. It’s important to energize yourself and go the distance on your own terms so as to improve your mental and physical wellbeing.

Lunchtime is a time of the day that should never be wasted. You’re not paid to work through your lunch hour so stop taking leftover work to the canteen or having your sandwiches at your desk and instead turn your work’s lunchtime into a mini-workout.

Treat this midday break as an opportunity to stretch and revitalize a body you’ve been neglecting all morning while you’ve been at your desk. Take a stroll into the town centre or to the shops, buy something and take a light jog back with the extra weight to really give your legs and arms a workout. Then take a break and eat your lunch and know you’ve worked up more of an appetite as well as burned a few calories in less than 30 minutes.

These are just some suggestions for getting a workout without the expense of a gym membership and while helping the planet too. Couple your efforts with good nutrition and you’re on the road to a really healthy lifestyle that your body will thank you for, for years to come.

Good suggestions but you're more active than I could ever be. I agree it's easier to fit this activity in now you've pointed it out but I just don't know if I can manage the time to do it all.

Sure you can! Just see what you can do whenever you can. Start a habit of taking the stairs if you take the lift or walking to a local place during your lunch break. Once you start you'll feel better for it and will urge yourself to keep it up! YOU CAN DO IT!
