Car production tumbles in the UK

Are YOU car sharing, walking, cycling, using public transport... or just buying second hand cars?

I'm not surprised. I'm a student at uni and buying a car was the plan until I saw how much running costs are including insurance, purchase, MOT, road tax and then fuel too - it just doesn't make sense in a time when we're supposed to be saving.

I know a lot of people who buy cars every 3 years or so and they haven't purchased one in the past 2 years because of the current financial climate. It's the recession plus the rising expense of owning and running a car. Lots of people switching to public transport if it's possible.

I've switched from using my car to public transport because I needed the extra time to prepare for work meetings. Now I'm glad - I get to work when I get to work, no waiting for the car park! Cheaper too - so much so I've sold my old 7 seater and replaced with a cheaper smaller car, which is there if I need it.

I've always bought second hand. New ones are a waste and rip off.

I got my first car at 18, drove it over Summer, didn't need it for uni as uni was more accessible by train and sold it after my first year. I paid for a whole year for a car I used 3 times in total. I'm relieved I don't have one now - you can't sell it if you got it and it costs loads to just have it sitting there. And if you want to go somewhere it's like burning money.Fuel prices won't go down, only up, so comparitively I'm pleased I went for the train instead.

I bought my first new car 3 years ago and regret it. Can't sell it for even half of what I paid and it's cost me the same price as my deposit for my house. We don't need more new cars, we need more cheaper vehicles!

I stick to 3rd or 4th hand cars because I just need a car in my budget, so i'd never get a new car.

Whoa, it's Saturday night and An Inconvenient Truth, Who Killed the Electric Car and an episode of South Park about Hybrid cars are all on at the same time! Talk about environmental overload!

I KNOW!!! I was thinking the same thing and came online too!

South Park is hilarious, in this episode one guy gets a hybrid and evryone copies him because it's good for the environment...until a massive black storm gathers over south park! Cracks me up!

South park is excellent, and so are the other two features, great stuff.

Whatever happens, I;d never buy a NEW car. Only rich people do that.

It's never worth getting a new car. Better to wait for them to iron out the kinks then get the 3rd hand upgraded version.

Staying away from buying a car in this climate. Can't afford to keep one.

I'm seriously not looking to buy a car either given how much insurance, fuel prices and road tax will set me back. Sorry UK, my money is needed in my pocket and not sitting on the road.
