Why Walk?

Cllr Sue Anderson on one of her walks

Councillor Susan Anderson is a volunteer walk leader and regularly leads walks in the borough. We asked her about when she started getting involved in led walks, why and what people can do to fit a walk into their day. Here's what she had to say:

"I started leading walking sessions about three years ago, after I had been trained by NHS Harrow. I thought it seemed like a great way of encouraging residents to take exercise and get to enjoy some of Harrow's less well known green spaces.

I am really lucky to be able to walk to work every day, which is good exercise and keeps me in touch with what is going on in my ward. At the weekend I enjoy making time for a longer walk in some of our open spaces such as Harrow Weald Common.

Walking helps you stay fit, gives you the chance to stop and chat with neighbours, helps reduce the air pollution from motor vehicles which kills thousands of Londoners every year and helps lift your mood when you're feeling down.

If you want to fit a walk into your working day, it really helps to get a friend to join you so you can encourage each other. Comfy shoes help too!"
