We were at the London Electric Vehicle Working Group yesterday at Transport for London's offices which provided some more information on the Source London scheme and announced the possibility of a wireless charging pilot later this year at TfL.

There will also be 2 major EV events this year - one in March and the other in mid-May (EcoVelocity).

Some people believe they can't change the world.

That the effort they make is so small when compared to the bigger scale of things that what they do does not matter. Why turn off a light bulb and save energy when a hotel across the road has its lights on all day and night? You can't win, right?

Well, if everyone believed that any effort was not worth it in the grand scheme of things, nobody would do anything. And the world would not have changed.

But everyone is different and every one of us has the ability to make a change.

By turning off one light bulb or taking a bus instead of the car, or packing your car full of people instead of making it a 'one driver, one car' statistic, or walking or cycling, you make a difference to the environment, to your journey, to your health and to your world. The immediate impact is on you and it's positive.

The secondary effects are the ones you don't see. You can't see the air quality improve around you because of the result of the actions of yourself and others. You can't see how you inspired someone else to do what you already do. Maybe the hotel will consider turning off the lights or using energy saving bulbs and perhaps they did it because they noticed you always turned the light off and cared about your actions and dared to make a difference.

The thing about making a difference is we don't always realise we're doing it.

And is every effort worth it? We don't get to always see the sum of all the parts that make up the whole picture. Every step you take counts because it has an impact on your body and health. Every journey you take is your way of making your world better.

Think about it.

Everyone's small efforts add up to a big difference. It's Up to All of Us.

Our favourite Harrow Walk Leader Rucksack is back!

You may remember we mentioned this rucksack travels all across the world on its walks and finds itself in places most of us couldn't reach. We are pleased to see it return with the following note sent in from a reader:

"(We) were doing a trip round illegally blocked and diverted footpaths in Brent and Harrow. This picture is of the rucksack at Northwick golf centre where the owners have built a golf driving range and illegally diverted the footpath around it."

We haven't seen this ourselves but the rucksack has! Where will it travel to next...?

Harrow Council has invested in four fuel efficient Diesel Smart cars to replace nine Vauxhall Combo Diesel Vans. The new smart-looking Smart cars will produce 25 percent less carbon emissions and cut around £12,000 from the council's annual transport bill as they are used for customer, site and crew visits, on road vehicle checks, quality inspections, parks locking, council emergencies, tool deliveries and more.

Now that's a lot of Smart in a small package.

I often spot these around the borough doing what they do best, but today I saw one right outside our own offices.

Next Monday, there is a Health Fair at Harrow Civic Centre. To support the health promotions, we're offering a Dr Bike outside the Civic Centre for staff, visitors, passers by, anyone nearby who has a bike and wants it looked at.

Where: Harrow Civic Centre, Station Road, Harrow.

Time: Our Bike Doctor will be there between 11am and 3pm on 10/10/11.

To help facilitate as many bikes serviced as possible we will not have any promotional material that we usually carry at information events. We hope to see you at the health fair and with your bike!

Electric vehicles need as much publicity as they can get. They're a new concept, require faith in the brand, design and a conquering over the overwhelming range-anxiety that people have about running out of electricity before they complete their journey.

Apart from posters, we've yet to see a full fledged EV commercial. Well it's coming soon according to this article which has spotted the Audi e-tron and BMW i3 on the road followed by camera crews.

The electric BMW i8 features in the new Mission Impossible film

Tom Cruise has a history with cool cars. We're not going to name-check the ones that didn't pass the green test but regularly shout about the electric Lexus in Minority Report. Now with the new trailer for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol showing a glimpse of the film's use of the BMW i8 we are thrilled that yet again, an electric car is getting prominence.

BMW's Ian Robertson recently stated that the high-tech concept car is "the perfect car for Ethan Hunt to outsmart his pursuers through narrow streets and busy city traffic."

Two Cyclists

In between the wet weather, we've caught many Harrow residents taking out their bikes and riding to catch the first drops of rain. Two people we've spotted regularly in Harrow town centre are teenagers Jake Raymond and Najeeb Ahmad.

We asked them what they like about cycling in Harrow and this is what they had to say:

Najeeb Ahmad, 17, West Harrow: "I enjoy riding around on my bike because it's the best way to get anywhere. You control your speed, get your legs moving and it's silly to start up a car and get stuck in traffic or wait for a bus if you can just get on your bike. Your journey starts the minute you get pedalling."

Jake Raymond, 19, Harrow on the Hill: "My mates were going on about it being wet outside and not cycling. I'm a med school student and time is really important to me. I told them to just stop moaning and wear protective clothing. I need an anorak and that's it. I'm careful when it's very wet but love riding in this weather because of the unpredictability of it all. It started in March when I took the bike out for convenience and then it started raining. I was out and about 20 mins from home. It was a thrill catching that first rainfall in the heat while I was cycling and now I go out hoping to be on the road before it starts raining. I love getting the first drops of rain on my face and then gliding through the downpours. Everything just feels fresh and you see Harrow in a different way. I'm not knocking the sun, we definitely need some of that and to see more people cycling, but I'm not a fair weather rider. I'll be out whatever it's like and enjoy things in life without too many conditions and restrictions like 'it has to be good weather to cycle'. Good luck trying to predict the weather! Best thing is to just get out. You'll probably be back before you get wet and it saves a packet on any gym fees."

Walking this Weekend

A guided walk is being held at Harrow School's nature reserve, Newlands Woods and golf course tomorrow to identify birds. To attend, meet at 0630am on Saturday outside the Blues Restaurant and Bar in High Street, Harrow on the Hill.

On Sunday a guided walk about St Mary's Church starts on the green at 230pm. This costs £3 for adults, £2 for concessions and children go free.

A HUGE welcome to the many new people joining our blog and learning about how to make a difference. This website is part of a multimedia effort to encourage greener and more sustainable forms of travelling that will have less of a negative impact on the environment.

Walking, cycling, taking a bus or train, car sharing (car pooling) or using greener cars (such as hybrids and electric vehicles) can all make a big difference to the planet in terms of improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and pollution. There are so many illnesses now attributed to poor air quality we can all make small changes in our daily life which will add up to one big effort. This is what It's Up to All of Us is all about.

If you're going out with friends, car share because the carbon footprint of a full car is less than that of a half empty bus. If you can, start walking and cycling more to get in shape, look after your heart and also to reduce the number of car journeys. You'll always discover new things to see on a walk or bike ride that you may miss otherwise.

If where you're going is a distance away, try taking a bus or train and using the time you have on the journey to listen to some music, catch up with friends, prepare for your meeting or read a book. With your hands free from the driving wheel and no need to keep your eyes on the road, you get additional 'me time' to relax, unwind or simply enjoy the ride.

Every journey you change can help, so whether it's a daily commute or a weekly one, do what you can and help save the planet. It's Up to All of Us!

Arnold Schwarzenegger visited London recently and too a bike ride on the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme bikes. He supported the initiative saying they were 'great for the world'. We love it when the Governator talks green, as he's been doing for years now.

Tom Cruise will be seen driving a BMW i8 Plug in Hybrid in the new Mission Impossible film The Ghost Protocol. The electric hybrid has some impressive stats but what's even more impressive is how megastar Tom Cruise also featured an electric car in Minority Report almost a decade ago, showing the future really is in cleaner and more efficient vehicles.

He's also just done a public service announcement promoting trains in the US (which we provided a teaser of last week) and has told the New York Times:
